Avant Garde Performance Art
This lesson is for a 12th grade Advanced Art class.
The Sunshine State Standards addressed within this lesson are:
VA.A.1.4 The student understands and applies media, techniques, and processes.
VA.B.1.4 The student creates and communicates a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas using knowledge of structures and functions of visual arts.

Objective:
Given materials about the history and state of performance art, students will create a storyboard for a performance of their design, and give a verbal presentation to the class. Students will also write a 1 page Artist's Statement about their performance, with a maximum of 5 spelling or grammatical errors.
The Bloom Taxonomy level this lesson targets is synthesis. Students will design and plan a performance based on their ideas, and selected influences.

In this lesson, students will watch part of the Cremaster Cycle by Matthew Barney. They will then do research in the computer lab about the history, and present state of performance art as a medium. Students will then develop a concept for a 2-3 minute performance based on an issue or topic of their choosing. This performance should address the topic through the use of metaphor. Students will write a 1 page Artists Statement describing the topic and motivations of their performance. Students will draw a storyboard describing their performance consisting of at least 10 frames. Students will then construct a Powerpoint presentation combining their storyboard and artist's statement, which they will present to the class.
